Cave and Karst Landscape Assessments

Karst Landscape

Karst is distinctive topography resulting from weathering and erosion. Karst landscape includes fluted and pitted formations, sinkholes, and shafts, sinking streams, underground streams, and caves formed when bedrock is dissolved by water. It is typically found in limestone areas. Karst and Caves are features vulnerable to environmental impact. Under the Forest Range and Practices Act in the South Island Forest District as of August 2009, forestry activities must not damage or adversely affect these features.

When Karst topography is found the Iisaak follows procedures outlined in their Environmental Management Systems manual, and has a geologist give advice on management of the area.
